Memorial for Anjaar's school children

The Gujarat government will build a memorial in the honour of over 300 school children who were buried alive with national flags in their hands at Anjaar in the January 26 earthquake.

The children were marching through the narrow streets of Anjaar when the killer quake struck.

"We will build a memorial for these children at an appropriate place in the town once the reconstruction work begins," Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya said.

The quake, which killed over 30,000, has left hundreds of children orphaned. The minister said his government is receiving adoption requests from all over the world.

"Many families from abroad and parts of India are approaching us to adopt these children," he said and added that the government would soon simplify adoption procedures for quake orphans.

The government has already announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 110,000 for the families who have lost a child in the quake.
