Fever toll rises to 21, has Bengal govt. worried

With eight more persons succumbing to a yet undiagonised fever during the last 24 hours in Siligri, the toll has risen to 21, West Bengal Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Asok Bhattacharya said in Siliguri on Thursday.

Bhattacharya said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was in constant touch with him and monitoring the situation. The chief minister asked him to take all possible measures to combat the killer fever and also assured him that funds would not be a constraint, the minister said.

Quoting the chief minister, Bhattacharya said that the state government was actively considering inviting a World Health Organisation team to help combat the disease, which was yet to be diagonised.

Bhattacharya said that 29 patients were admitted to the Siliguri Sub-divisional and North Bengal Medical College hospitals with symptoms of the disease.

He appealed the media not to create panic on the issue.

The minister has sanctioned a special fund of Rs one million to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation to take special measures for cleaning the city and spraying mosquito oil.
