Grenade found in Hurriyat chief's car

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A hand grenade was found in Hurriyat chairman Abdul Ghani Butt's vehicle when he visited Tarzoo, Sopore, in north Kashmir on Thursday.

Butt, who called on the family of Mansoor Ahmed, who died in security forces' firing at Haigam last week, told rediff.com, "In honour of the cease-fire they wanted to kill me. They wanted a big catch, but it was unfortunate for them."

The Hurriyat chairman said he was about to get into his vehicle when the crowds alerted him to the grenade tied to it. The grenade was handed over to his security guards, who handed it over to the security forces. "I don't know who is behind the incident, but it is for the government to probe. But I can understand who did it," Butt said. "Had the grenade exploded, it would have eliminated us all."

The police confirmed that a grenade had been handed over to the security forces in the area.

Prior to this, the Hurriyat chairman addressed a crowd of 400-500 who had gathered in the area.
