Power situation in J&K improves marginally

Our Correspondent in Srinagar

People in the Kashmir valley got a minor, very minor, respite from the power crisis in the state on Friday after authorities started up two gas turbines at Pampore.

This means that apart from the one hour of electricity that the residents of the valley get every day, they will now 'enjoy' an additional three hours of power every five days.

It may not sound much, but the state power authorities said this was all they could manage at the moment.

The gas turbines, which have not been used for ages, can generate 125MW of power at their peak, but as of now they are producing about 60MW.

Meanwhile, there's still no sign of the transmission towers near Banihal, which were put out of commission by militants, being restored.

Even the emergency restoration system, which was supposed to have been activated by Saturday morning, will now take a 'couple of days' more, said Ajith Kumar, secretary in the Jammu & Kashmir power development department.
