Trinamul calls for Bengal bandh

The Trinamul Congress has called a 12-hour Bengal bandh on Friday to protest against the attack on Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday.

Trinamul's policy making cell's chairman Pankaj Banerjee said Wednesday's violence has forced his party to renew its demand for imposition of President's rule in West Bengal.

The party has alleged that Communist Party of India goons were behind the attack on its leader in Keshpur on Wednesday. Several Trinamul workers were also injured in the attack.

Talking to rediff.com, Banerjee said that the bandh would begin at 0600 IST on Friday.

"The CPI-sponsored attacks have corroborated our charges about the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal. Where is the guarantee for the safety of an ordinary person when the life of a Union minister is not safe?" he asked

Mamata, who has reportedly hurt her feet, is currently in Midnapore and is expected to arrive in Calcutta on Thursday evening.

When asked if the Bharatiya Janata Party has extended its support to the bandh, Trinamul MLA Sobhandeb Chattopaddhyay said: "We expect all opposition parties to support us."

Meanwhile, the Trinamul Congress renewed its demand for imposing President's Rule in West Bengal in view of 'total breakdown of law and order machinery' and alleged that a 'conspiracy' had been hatched to eliminate Mamata Banerjee at Keshpur.

"President's Rule should be imposed prior to the next assembly elections in the state in a free and fair manner", Trinamul Congress' Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandhopadhyay said.
