Centre says W Bengal was warned
about violence

Replying to questions by reporters whether the Centre was contemplating sending an advisory to the state government in the wake of Trinamul Congress allegation that 18 of its workers were burnt to death, officials said the Centre had drawn the attention of the state government about the vulnerability of Midnapore area to political violence.

The Centre had pin-pointed even the police stations where tension was building up between supporters of the Trinamul Congress party and the ruling Left Front.

The officials said reports had pointed out that Marxist cadres were expected to attack and recapture certain villages, which had voted for Trinamul candidates in the recent local bodies' elections.

The ministry had then advised the state government to take all possible measures and defuse the situation and prevent violence, they said.
