Fernandes for central rule in Bengal: PTI

Union Defence Minister and Samata Party leader George Fernandes Monday favoured imposition of President's rule in West Bengal where, he charged, 'lawlessness' prevailed.

''The situation in West Bengal calls for imposition of President's rule. West Bengal is witnessing murders and lawlessness prevails in that state,'' he told reporters in Mysore, backing the long-standing demand of the Trinamul Congress, a key partner in the National Democratic Alliance.

On whether he would take any initiative regarding bringing West Bengal under the central rule, Fernandes recalled the 'bad experience' the NDA had in its move to impose President's rule in Bihar as it could not muster enough support in Parliament.

''Unless the Congress supports it in the Rajya Sabha, we will not be able to do it,'' he said.
