More Tibetan demonstrators
detained on Friday morning

Scores of Tibetan demonstrators were rounded up by police near Qutub Minar as they lined up to show black flags to visiting Chinese leader Li Peng at the historic monument on Friday morning.

Local police said about 25 to 30 Tibetans, including women, were picked up from the Qutub Minar and detained at the Mehrauli police station at about 1000 hours (IST).

The demonstrators were picked up peacefully and there was no use of force, police said. ''We will let them off after questioning,'' they added.

In a statement, the Tibetan Women's Association, which spearheaded the demonstration, said the Tibetans in exile were not protesting against Li Peng's visit but were using the opportunity to highlight once again the need for Beijing to open unconditional talks with the Dalai Lama.

''Unless the issue of Tibet is resolved, there cannot be long term national interest of Asia's two largest countries,'' the Association added.

Nearly 40 Tibetan demonstrators were arrested by the Delhi police on Thursday for attempting to disrupt the motorcade of the senior Chinese leader on his arrival in the capital from Bombay.

Police picked up 25 protestors near the Dhaula Kuan roundabout shortly before Li's motorcade was to pass through the heavily-guarded route from the airport. About 15 flag-carrying demonstrators were arrested near Hotel Taj Palace where the visiting dignitary is staying.

Li, on a nine-day visit to India, arrived from Bombay on Thursday and is expected to meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh besides a delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry during his stay in the capital.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the routes and venues to be visited by the senior Chinese leader in the city.
