Hindu-Muslim meet on Ayodhya fails

The much-hyped meeting of Hindu and Muslim leaders on the Ayodhya issue in Faizabad on Saturday turned out to be a damp squib with only a few leaders turning up.

One of the petitioners in the Ayodhya title dispute, Mohammed Hasim Ansari, also kept away.

The meeting decided to resolve the temple dispute at the local level and not allow political parties to draw mileage out of it.

Bajrang Dal chief Vinay Katiyar, who addressed a press conference with some Muslim leaders after the meeting, said the next round of talks would be held in the first week of March.

Terming the talks a positive step, Katiyar said instead of going into the details of what the Muslim Personal Law Board or Hindu organisations or law says on the issue, they would like to resolve the dispute at the local level with mutual understanding.

About 100 Muslim leaders from Faizabad, including the imam of Bhagwa Pir and Haji Ahmed Shakeel of the All India Muslim Conference participated in Saturday's talks.
