CID confirms clash, deaths in Garbeta

The Criminal Investigation Department team investigating the alleged Choto Anguria carnage in Garbeta block of Midnapore district has confirmed that a clash had taken place and there were casualties.

"A clash occurred and a few men from both sides were killed. But the number of those killed and their identities are yet to be established," Director General of Police Dipak Kumar Sanyal said, quoting a preliminary report submitted by the team.

It also confirmed that attempts were made to conceal evidence of the clash. "The team found bloodstained soil as well as clothes," Sanyal said. Police are still looking for the bodies.

The CID also found evidence of a large stockpile of arms and ammunition in Abdur Rahman's house, which was gutted.

"Bullets exploded as the house was set on fire. Many bullet heads came out of the projectiles, which explains the abundance of empty cartridges in the gutted house," he said.

Some bullets produced by the Ichhapore Ordnance Factory were also found.

Sanyal said the Trinamul Congress and Naxalites were one side of the warring parties, but refused to name the Communist Party of India, Marxist, as the other.

The January 4 incident rocked West Bengal with the Trinamul Congress and the People's War Group both alleging that CPI-M activists had burnt to death their activists in the village.

But till date, not a single body has been found and Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee has not confirmed any death, though he has handed over the case to the CID.
