Muslim law board toughens stand on Ayodhya

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board Sunday said the status of the disputed land in Ayodhya, where the Babri masjid once stood, is non-negotiable and the board desires no dialogue with the people who brought down the mosque.

Senior member of the board, Yusuf Muchala, who briefed newspersons after an AIMPLB meeting in Delhi, said the atmosphere of communal amity in the country has been vitiated by communal forces to meet their political ends.

"A hate campaign had been unleashed by anti-social and anti-national forces against the Muslim community," he charged.

Muchala said the board has constituted a five-member committee to create awareness among masses about communal designs of certain politico-religious parties.

The committee would also seek a solution to the Babri masjid dispute within the ambit of the rule of law and the Constitution of India, Muchala said.

"The AIMPLB is prepared to give due consideration to any initiative by the Union to start a meaningful discussion on the matter," he added.

Asked what the board would do if it received an invitation for talks from the Sangh Parivar, Muchala said: "It's a hypothetical question."

Senior Muslim leader and the convenor of the Babri Masjid Movement Coordination Committee Syed Shahabuddin said: "We are not ruling out negotiations. But we have to examine whether the government is sincere."
