Deviation from NDA agenda not
acceptable: Chandrababu Naidu

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday reiterated that his party would not tolerate any deviation from the National Agenda of Governance adopted by the National Democratic Alliance government.

Addressing a broad-based meeting of his party functionaries in Hyderabad, Naidu said, "The TDP is committed to secular ideals and it will not be a party to any deviation from the NDA agenda. There can be no compromise on secularism."

He lambasted political parties and other organisations for harping on the mandir-masjid row instead of concentrating on developmental issues. He suggested all political parties focus their energies on important socio-economic problems facing the country as well as the task of ensuring its all-round development.

According to party sources, Naidu is likely to take up the attempts of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party to revive the temple issue in his proposed meeting with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his visit to Delhi on Wednesday.

He is expected to convey the TDP's concern over the actions and utterances of BJP and other constituents of the Sangh Parivar, which have the potential of creating communal tension in the country.

In an oblique reference to the deadline set by the VHP for removing the hurdles in the way of the proposed construction of the Ram temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya, Naidu said that the court would decide on the Ram janma bhoomi-Babri masjid dispute and that the country would ill-afford to waste time on matters like this when the nation faced more serious economic problems.

"We should go ahead with the development agenda rather than contentious issues," he said.
