CBI begins questioning P P Hinduja

This is the first time that P P Hinduja is being quizzed by the agency, since the trial court directed the three accused brothers on January 19 to make themselves available to the CBI for questioning.

Hinduja Group chairman S P Hinduja was questioned by the CBI for more than 13 hours, spread over four days. An agency spokesman said while S P Hindjua's interrogation had been completed for the time being, he could be summoned again, if need be.

The third brother, Gopichand P Hinduja, will be questioned later.

Prakashchand Hinduja arrived at the CBI headquarters at the CGO complex at 1130 hours IST accompanied by his lawyers. Sources, however, said the lawyers would not be allowed to stay within the earshot of the interrogators led by Joint Director B R Dubey and DIG O P Gilhotra.

The special CBI court, headed by Ajit Bharihoke, on January 22 gave the CBI another week, till January 30, to continue its questioning of the brothers, who avoided appearing before the CBI during investigations and came here only after the trial court took cognisance of the chargesheet against them.

According to the CBI, the brothers allegedly received 81 million Swedish kroner in their secret Swiss accounts Lotus, Tulip and Mont Blanc from Swedish arms manufacturer A B Bofors to secure the a 155 mm howitzer gun deal for it in 1986.

The Hindujas, however, have denied that the amount was as kickbacks.
