Parallel Dharam Sansad poses questions
about Ram temple construction deadline

Defying the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a parallel 'Dharam Sansad' on Saturday questioned the deadline set up by the VHP-sponsored gathering in Kumbh Nagar for Ram temple construction saying it did not have the mandate of the Sadhu Samaj to decide on such a 'sensitive' issue.

"The VHP-sponsored Dharam Sansad has no locus standi to unilaterally announce the deadline of March 12, 2002 for removing obstacles in the way of temple construction," the parallel Sansad, attended by three Shankaracharyas and saints, said.

It accused the VHP of taking political mileage out of its 'orchestrated campaign' for Ram temple construction. "The VHP has not been able to get the disputed land released despite a friendly government in power. This speaks volume of its commitment to the cause of Ram temple," Anand Swaroop Brahmachari told reporters.

The parallel gathering was held at the camp of the Shankaracharya of Dwarka and Badrikashram Swaroopanand Saraswati.

The parallel Dharam Sansad also questioned the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas Samiti's claim over the land where the statute of 'Ram Lalla' was installed nine years ago and said it belonged to the Nirmohi Akhara.

"The Nirmohi Akhara is a party to the title suit in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court and not the VHP or Nyas Samiti," Anand Swaroop pointed out.

The parallel gathering adopted resolutions on banning cow slaughter and religious conversion, which it said was taking place due to 'political reasons', Anand said. It demanded ban entry of multinationals in the country and removal of the word 'secular' from the Constitution and substituted by Sarva dharam sambhav (love for all religions), Swaroop said.

The gathering decided to form a Sanatan Dharam Manch for holding interactive sessions among sants at regular interval. The manch will have its headquarters at Varanasi.
