Child adoption case: Savithriamma in police custody

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Savithriamma, prime accused in the child adoption racket, has been remanded to police custody for eight days from August 1.

Ninth metropolitan magistrate Anand Rao on Tuesday ordered that Savithriamma, who is currently lodged in Chanchalguda women's jail, be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for interrogation.

Earlier, the CID had moved a petition before the court seeking her custody to ascertain more facts relating to the child adoption scandal.

Savithriamma, who carried a reward of Rs 500,000 on her head, had surrendered before the court on July 26 after eluding the police for almost four months.

She ran the John Abraham Memorial Bethany Home in Rangareddy district from where the Child Welfare Department officials had rescued 60 children on April 21.

Six more children were rescued from a hideout run by her a few days later. Her adoption home was subsequently de-recognised by the Central Adoption Resource Agency.
