Negotiations can solve Ayodhya issue: Advani

Union Home Minister L K Advani Thursday reiterated that the Ayodhya issue could be resolved through a negotiated settlement or a legislation and said even the consolidation of all pending cases in various courts would not solve the matter.

Deposing before the Liberhan Commission, probing the demolition of Babri mosque in Ayodhya, he said: ''The history of the case is itself a lesson for us that if this matter can be resolved it is mainly through a negotiated settlement or legislation.''

The home minister was responding to commission counsel Anupam Gupta's question regarding the proposal of consolidation of all cases pending on the issue in various courts of the country and the reference of the matter to a single judicial authority.

''Even the consolidation of all cases would not solve the matter though one cannot object to it if such a proposal comes.''

Gupta said the proposal about the consolidation of Ayodhya cases had come up during a meeting of the then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao with sants and sadhus in July 1992.

However, Advani said he was not aware of any such proposal coming from Rao in that meeting.
