Breakthrough in Ghisingh
attack probe soon: PTI

A breakthrough in the case relating to the attack on Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council chairman Subhas Ghisingh is expected within a day or two, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhabeb Bhattacharjee said in Jalpaiguir on Sunday.

"The police have got an important clue on the attack on the Gorkha National Liberation Front leader. There will be a breakthrough in the case within a day or two," Bhattacharjee told reporters after inaugurating a building of the Uttar Banga Unnayan Parishad.

A Siliguri report said the prime accused and his associate were arrested on Saturday night in connection with the February 10 ambush.

Saran Dewan, a former front-ranking leader in the GNLF's militant wing Gorkha Volunteer Cell and who had recently joined the Trinamool Congress in Kurseong, and his associate Arjun Tamang were arrested from Lohagarh under Naxalbari police station, Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, Sanjay Chander told newsmen.

They were remanded to police custody after being produced before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate's court in Kurseong.

Chander said Dewan, who had a record of criminal offences and was a resident of Singel tea estate, had given the police clues during interrogation, which would prove "very useful" in unearthing facts behind the ambush.

Ghisingh was seriously injured in an attack on his motorcade by gunmen near Kurseong on February 10, which left three persons, including one of the attackers, dead.

The security of Ghisingh was the responsibility of the state government and the government was taking all possible measures for his safety, the chief minister said.

The state government, Bhattacharjee said, would not hand over security of the DGHC chairman to anyone. Ghisingh had earlier demanded that the DGHC be allowed to raise its own security force.
