discharged from hospital

Geelani was being released by police near his residence in Hyderpora at about 1030 hours local time Saturday when he started shouting and his supporters pelted stones at the police party, a police spokesman said.

Sources said Geelani fell down as the police party engaged in a fight with the crowd, after which he complained of chest pain. But the spokesman said the police did not indulge in any scuffle and had instead left the scene.

Heeding Geelani's complaints of uneasiness, he was admitted to the Soura Medical Institute. However, after a series of tests, the doctors discharged him stating that he was in a healthy condition.

Geelani had been taken into preventive custody Friday along with his associates following his call to demonstrate after the Friday prayers in protest against the burning of the holy Quran in New Delhi recently.

Groups of people had taken to the streets at Hyderpora after news broke out that Geelani had been admitted to hospital.

Police had to burst some teargas shells and resort to cane-charge to control the stone-throwing mob.

The police spokesman said that the police had offered to release Geelani on Friday evening, but he refused.

Geelani's associate, Yousuf Mujahid, has not been released because of his involvement in a criminal case, the spokesman added.

Muhajid, a former divisional commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, had been trying to muster the support of some former HM militants, according to official sources.

Meanwhile, a Hizb-ul Mujahideen press release issued here said that they have identified the police task force officials who were involved in the scuffle with Geelani.

Expressing solidarity with Geelani, the militant outfit warned the taskforce of dire consequences.
