Cong denies change in stance on Ayodhya

Congress Monday denied any change in its stance on the Ayodhya issue saying the amendment in the political resolution moved at the AICC session was aimed to make the matter more explicit.

"It was wrong to say that the amendment in the political resolution on Ayodhya has changed the character of the resolution. What was implicit was made explicit through the amendment," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters.

He said the amendment moved by chairman of the AICC's legal cell R N Mittal that 'Congress believes that all parties must abide by the judgement of the apex court on the issue" was accepted by Arjun Singh, who moved the political resolution.

He said Congress had always maintained that it was not against construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya but was opposed to its construction on the demolition site.
