Trinamul Congress 'C' team of CPI-M, says Vajpayee

"The Trinamul Congress had dubbed the Congress as the 'B' team of the CPI-M, but after allying with the Congress it had itself become the 'C' team of the CPI-M," Vajpayee told an election rally in Bulbulchandi, 30 km from Malda.

Without naming Mamata Banerjee, he said the Trinamul Congress was 'now fishing in troubled waters'.

He also said he doubted if the Trinamul Congress-Congress combine could make any change in the state.

On the prospects of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the hustings, he said, "Someone once asked me what will be the BJP's role after the assembly elections in Bengal, especially since our prospects are not very bright in this state."

"I replied that the BJP will emerge as a small party in the assembly, but its function will be like the brakes of a car. It will regulate the functioning of the new government and ensure the people's interests are not run over," he said.

Stating that he was concerned over law and order in West Bengal, he said the state used to be counted among the progressive ones in the country at one time, but was now at the bottom of the list.

He said the Left Front's cup had overflowed in the 24 years of its rule. "Corruption pervades everywhere in the country. If I give one rupee for the poor in rural areas, only ten paisa reaches them. The rest is lost on the way. And this Left-ruled state is no exception.
