Belying early trends and the predictions of exit polls, the Left Front looked set to remain in power for a record sixth successive term, winning 145 of the 214 seats declared and leading overall in 194 of the 289 seats for which trends were available at 1700 IST.
The Trinamul Congress alliance had won 62 and was leading in 24 other seats.
The LF wrested two seats in Calcutta City from the TC and retained Ghatal and Chandrakona in Midnapur and Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas district.
TC candidate and actor Tapas Paul defeated his nearest CPI-M rival, Mira Bhowmick, while party heavyweight Pankaj Banerjee retained his Tollygunje seat.
LF wrested the Jorabagan and Shyampukur seats from the TC. In Jorabagan seat, sitting TC candidate Sanjay Bakshi lost to CPI-M candidate Sudhangshu Seal, while in Shyampukur seat, sitting TC nominee Pulak Das was defeated by Forward Bloc candidate Subrata Basu by 6000 votes.
In Maheshtala constituency, CPI-M candidate Murasolin Molla got the better of the TC's Biman Banerjee.
