Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Sunday resigned from her post owning moral responsibility for her party's defeat in the assembly elections in West Bengal.
Banerjee resigned at the party's policy-making body meeting during the day which reviewed the poll outcome, TC policy-making body chairman Pankaj Banerjee told newsmen at her residence in Calcutta.
"But we have requested her to reconsider her decision in the interest of the people of the state", he said.
The Trinamul Congress chief remained indoors throughout the day.
Alleging that large-scale rigging and electoral malpractices by the ruling Left Front were responsible for the party's defeat, the TC leader said, "We are ashamed and we apologise to the people for failing to create the atmosphere for them to vote freely."
Asked if the tie-up with the Congress just before the polls had affected Trinamul's prospects, he replied in the negative and said that alliance with Congress would continue.
