The Assembly Elections 2001: Tamil Nadu

AIADMK poised to form govt on its own

The All-India Anna DMK, which leads the secular front, Sunday inflicted defeat on the ruling DMK and is poised to form a government in Tamil Nadu on its own, following a landslide win.

With Chief Minister M Karunanidhi conceding defeat, AIADMk supremo J Jayalalitha announced that she would meet Governor Fathima Beevi to discuss ministry formation after the AIADMK legislature party elected its leader on Monday.

The AIADMK has won 48 of 87 seats, results for which were declared, and was leading in about 80 constituencies and was set to romp home with a tally of 125 seats and form a government of its own judging by the leads, the secular front's tally is expected to cross over 200.

The ruling DMK has won only 10 seats, and its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party one seat.

Karunanidhi tendered the resignation of his cabinet in the evening.

Jayalalitha, who was debarred from contesting elections, said she accepted the verdict of the people as the ''verdict of god''.

She also made it clear that she was for cordial relationship with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.
