Panja defies boycott call, attends Buddha's swearing in

Dissident Trinamul Congress leader Ajit Panja Friday defied his party's boycott of the swearing in ceremony of the sixth Left Front government saying it was 'irresponsible' on the part of party chief Mamata Banerjee.

Panja, who came to the Raj Bhavan directly from the Calcutta High Court, said "Banerjee was unnecessarily getting into a direct confrontation with the state government without any provocation."

"Her act is an example of irresponsible behaviour. I think she should instead try to give the people a more responsible and responsive opposition," he said.

Panja, dressed in the lawyer's robe, was hugged by Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo members Biman Bose and Anil Biswas as photographers clicked away. The former Union minister accepted greetings with a smile.

He also warmly shook hands with Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee.
