Conditional bail for former Goa minister

The vacation judge of the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court, Justice A Bobde, on Saturday granted conditional bail to former Goa power minister and Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mauvin Godinho who was arrested on May 16 on charges of corruption and criminal conspiracy.

The court directed the police to release him on May 22 after Godinho furnished a bond of Rs 25,000 and two sureties of like amount.

The court has directed Godhino not to leave the state without prior permission of the state Deputy Inspector General and make himself available as and when the police wanted to interrogate him.

Godinho had, without the cabinet's consent, issued a notification in 1996 benefitting some industries, which were not entitled to power rebate thereby causing loss of Rs 90 million to the state exchequer.

The high court recently quashed the 1996 notification issued by Godinho terming it as illegal while passing judgment in a case filed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar some years back.

Earlier, Godinho's bail application was rejected by the sessions court of Mapusa, which he challenged before the high court.
