External Affairs and Defence Minister Jaswant Singh on Wednesday stressed that the post of the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and National Security Adviser would not be bifurcated in the near future.
He was speaking to reporters at the function where Union Minister L K Advani, chairman of the Group of Ministers set up in to review the national security system, on Wednesday released the comprehensive report the GoM had submitted to the prime minister.
The GoM had been set up in April 2000 to review the national security system in its entirety and in particular to consider the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee and formulate specific proposals for implementation.
Jaswant Singh said the post of the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and the National Security Adviser had been combined as the National Security Council was still in its formative stage.
At present, principal secretary to the prime minister Brajesh Mishra holds both these posts.
Advani did not agree with the reporters that the country's national security had been weakened following the Kargil war, the proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir and the recent flare up on the Bangladesh border.
Advani said the Vajpayee government had been very conscious of its responsibilities in the context of the over all national security scenario,.
