Eminent Telugu film actor and former Rajya Sabha member Mohan Babu was on Wednesday convicted by a criminal court in Andhra Pradesh and sentenced to undergo seven days' simple imprisonment for assaulting an election observer during the 1996 Lok Sabha elections.
Amudalavalasa First Class Judicial Magistrate Chakrapani found Mohan Babu guilty of assaulting and obstructing senior IAS officer M R Banerjee from discharging his duties at a polling booth at Mandadi near Amudalavalasa in Srikakulam district.
Mohan Babu was a Rajya Sabha member of the ruling Telugu Desam Party at that time.
The election observer, hailing from West Bengal, lodged a complaint with the police on April 22, 1996 against Mohan Babu.
Mohan Babu was present in the court when the judgment was delivered. For now, he has been granted bail for moving an appeal.
