Govt to open cell to 'monitor' Ayodhya negotiations

Close on the heels of Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists defying the security cordon and entering the makeshift Ram temple at Ayodhya, the government has decided to open a cell to 'monitor' the negotiations over the Babri masjid-Ram temple dispute, official sources said in Delhi on Wednesday night.

The cell was started by former prime minister Chandra Shekar during his brief stint. However, it had virtually become defunct after his tenure ended.

The proposed cell will function in the Cabinet Secretariat and will be headed by Shatrughan Singh, a 1983 batch IAS officer from the Uttranchal cadre, the sources said.

The decision to revive the cell was taken after some VHP leaders, including Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore and 40 others stormed into the sanctum sanctorum of the makeshift Ram temple on October 17 in violation of a Supreme Court order, which allowed 'darshan' to devotees from a specified distance.
