Magistrate, circle officer suspended in Ayodhya temple entry case

The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday suspended the magistrate and the circle officer posted at the disputed site in Ayodhya for 'dereliction of duty and laxity' in connection with the forcible entry of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders into the sanctum-sanctorum of the make-shift temple in the disputed Ram janambhumi-Babri masjid complex on October 17.

Magistrate Alok Verma and Circle Officer Shailendr Kumar Rai have been suspended with immediate effect following the report submitted by the ADG (Intelligence) Himanshu Kumar to the state government on the incident, Principal Secretary (home) Naresh Dayal said in Lucknow.

A departmental inquiry has been ordered against them, Dayal said in a release, adding Urban Development Secretary Jai shankar Mishra would conduct the probe.
