Temple storming was 'shock treatment': VHP

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international president Ashok Singhal on Thursday said his forced entry into the makeshift temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya recently was intended to give a 'shock-treatment' to both the Centre and the state government to accede to its demand for allowing 'meaningful darshan' (view).

"We wanted to give shock-treatment as the eight-point charter of demands given by the VHP to the government about having darshan at the make-shift temple in Ayodhya was yet to be fulfilled," Singhal told newspersons in Varanasi while justifying his controversial action.

Stating that neither he nor the security forces deployed at the complex violated any law, Singhal instead turned the tables on the state and the Centre saying they were violating court directives by not allowing 'meaningful darshan' to the devotees.

Singhal said the government was violating the high court directive by allowing the devotees to have darshan from a distance of 15 metres whereas the court has allowed darshan from such a distance that was not 'disproportionate and too far off'.

Singhal disclosed that he, along with the chairman of the Ram Janambhumi Nyas Trust Mahant Paramhans Ram Chandra Das, had met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee after the October 17 incident and apprised him of the whole matter.

The prime minister, Singhal claimed, reiterated that hurdles in the way of the Ram temple construction would be removed by March next year.
