Suresh Budhermal 'Pappu' Kalani, member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Ulhasnagar, was on Monday released from Yerwada prison near Pune, where he had been incarcerated since 1992 following his arrest in more than eight cases registered under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.
The Supreme Court had ordered Kalani's release on bail last week, on condition that he would leave Maharashtra and go to Surat in neighbouring Gujarat, where he has been asked to report to the police station at Uddna.
Designated Judge P N Jagtap released Kalani on two sureties of Rs 50,000 each provided by his uncle Parsram and brother Nirmal.
Kalani, 49, had secured bail in all but one of the cases against him. He then moved the Supreme Court and secured a favourable order in the remaining case.
Kalani, who twice won the state assembly elections from jail with a thumping majority, was released at 1815 IST and greeted by friends and relatives who then drove him away in a car.
