Joshi asks critics to prove their point

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Union Minister for Human Resources Development Dr Murali Manohar Joshi on Thursday rejected the charge that the National Democratic Alliance government is "saffronising" the education system in the country.

He challenged the critics of the new curriculum framework to prove their charge that the ruling alliance is deviating from the National Education Policy of 1986.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Federation of AP Minority Educational Institutions, Dr Joshi asserted that he would make necessary corrections if the critics succeeded in proving their point.

"The new curriculum framework will not introduce education of a particular religion, but it will be education about religions," Dr Joshi said and pointed out that for the first time a framework would be introduced to highlight the commonality of religions.

The minister lashed out at the Communist parties for distorting Indian history. Pointing out that "Indian history is not the history of just one family," he said there was no mention of countless freedom fighters in the textbooks.

"Our government is merely trying to remove these distortions. We want to give a sense of pride to Indian nationhood, its history and its capabilities," he said.
