Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar
Two activists of the shadowy Lashkar-e-Jabbar heading the campaign to put Kashmiri women behind the purdah threw paint on a schoolteacher who was on her way to work without a veil on Tuesday morning.
The organisation's deadline for all Muslim women in Jammu & Kashmir to start using the burqa expired on Tuesday morning.
Police said the activists threw colour on the teacher, identified only as Kulsuma, before escaping in an autorickshaw near the Karalkhud police station in uptown Srinagar.
Police arrested the autorickshaw driver, but the two Lashkar-e-Jabbar activists managed to escape. The driver is being questioned.
Most women in Srinagar on Tuesday were seen wearing the burqa. Security around educational institutions and women-dominated state government offices and bus stands was tight with the deployment of additional paramilitary forces and police personnel.
