BJP, BSP hold talks over government
formation in UP

The Bharatiya Janata Party and Bahujan Samaj Party on Wednesday night appeared to be making efforts to break the impasse over the issue of government formation in Uttar Pradesh, which was brought under President's rule following a fractured verdict in the assembly polls.

BJP sources said Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi held discussions with BSP leader Mayawati in New Delhi in spite of opposition from the party's UP unit, which favoured sitting in the opposition.

A section of the BJP legislators were keen on tying up with the BSP, as they felt that fresh polls would further damage the party, they said.

The BJP finished third behind the Samajwadi Party and BSP in the recent elections.

The nitty-gritty of any deal would be worked out only if the two parties succeed in finding a way out during the current talks, the sources said.

BSP leader Kanshi Ram had said last week that his party could agree to share power with any party, which accepted Mayawati as the chief minister.
