Bomb blasts near Bengal mosques, eight hurt

Eight people were injured in bomb blasts near three mosques during Friday prayers at Chandernagore in Hooghly district of West Bengal.

IGP (Law and Order) Chayan Mukherjee said the bombs went off while prayers were being offered in three mosques in Segunbagan area under Chandernagore police station.

Lathi-wielding policemen who arrived on the scene chased away miscreants, who hurled brickbats and bombs while retreating, the IGP said in Kolkata.

One of the miscreants was critically injured when a bomb he was carrying in his trouser pocket went off, Mukherjee said. He was admitted to Chinsurah hospital, he added.

The para-military Rapid Action Force and the Eastern Frontier Rifles were deployed in the Chandernagore police station area in view of the prevailing tension, he said.

Jitram Bhagat, IGP (Western Range), was camping in the area along with the district magistrate and the superintendent of police.
