Centre warns states over POTA issue

Bharatiya Janata Party president Jana Krishnamurthy on Tuesday said that the Centre would be compelled to explore constitutional remedies if the states ruled by the Congress and other opposition parties did not cooperate in curbing terrorism.

"If a state government does not cooperate in curbing terrorism, then the Centre must see what are the constitutional remedies," he said in Kolkata.

When asked if the Centre would force the states to implement the Prevention of Terrorism Act, he said: "We will seek constitutional remedies. Let us see what can be done."

Criticising the Congress, he said the party could have moved amendments, but it opposed the Prevention of Terrorism Bill, necessitating the convening of a joint sitting of Parliament to get it passed.

"If terrorist organisations function in the states ruled by the Congress and the Communists and if those state governments refused to use POTA what would be the situation?" he asked.
