Kanchi seer holds talks with Muslim leaders

He said on Saturday that there was a frank exchange of views and he received "encouraging response" from the Muslim leaders for creating a conducive atmosphere for solving the Ram temple-Babri mosque issue.

He said it was necessary to continue the dialogue between the two communities to lay the foundation for mutual agreement on the issue.

However, the Shankaracharya said he did not plan to talk to Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders during his present visit to Ayodhya.

On the communal violence in Gujarat, he said people should forget and forgive the past for lasting peace and communal harmony.

Some local saints and mahants, including Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, Mahant Siyakishori Sharan and Jagatguru Purushottamacharya met the Shankaracharya on Friday.

The Shankaracharya later left for New Delhi.
