VHP opposes excavations at disputed site

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Sunday opposed the Allahabad high court's suggestion to carry out an excavation at the disputed site in Ayodhya to ascertain whether a Ram temple existed there before the Babri Masjid.

Excavations at the site would mean removing the statue of Lord Ram, which would violate the sanctity of the temple, VHP international secretary general Pravin Togadia claimed in Agra.

Besides, he said, excavations carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1992 had proved that a Ram temple existed there.

He said the VHP would soon start a movement for bringing in a legislation to allow the construction of the Ram temple.

Togadia said there were three ways of resolving the vexed issue -- by talks between Hindus and Muslims, by a court verdict, or by a legislation -- but added that the VHP did not favour a court decision as it believed that matters of faith were beyond the jurisdiction of courts.
