"We are not happy. We went to him (Vajpayee) with certain expectations and we came back empty handed. All the assurance we got was that he will ask the law minister to examine the legal and constitutional aspects of our demand," VHP president Vishnu Hari Dalmia said participating in Karan Thapar's Line of Fire programme on SAB TV to be telecast on Saturday.
"Why now? The government had 12 months' time to seek legal opinion, there was 12 months' time to have the court cases expedited. But they did nothing," Dalmia pointed out.
While declining to comment on whether Vajpayee was 'insincere', the VHP leader said, "He may be having his own problems and compulsion. As far as we are concerned, they have been sleeping on this issue for the last 12 months."
Dalmia said there was no need for the prime minister to talk to the VHP about a negotiated settlement.
"All that he had to do was to convince the other side (Muslims) that their claim is unjustified and they should accept the position taken by VHP," he said.
Justifying the VHP's opposition to a court verdict on the issue, he said, "The court case is not progressing. It is already pending in the courts for the last 50 years and the way it is going on, it will take another 50 years. You cannot wait indefinitely."
