An eyewitness account by S K Saha, a watchmen in Himalya House, which is adjacent to the United States Information Service office.
It was a foggy morning and I was waiting for my colleague to takeover the security duties, as I had finished my shift.
Suddenly, I could see two motorcycles speeding towards our building.
Before I could make out why there was so much noise in the morning, the pillion riders took out rifles and started firing on the policemen guarding the USIS building.
I got very scared and could not make out what was happening.
I hid behind a gate and kept watching. I could not see the face of the assailants, as the fog had reduced visibility.
They did not even stop for a second, and kept on firing even as they were moving.
When they left, I noticed a pool of blood and the bodies of four policemen lying on the ground.
They did not even spare the pedestrians and fired in all directions.
The assailants came from 38 northern Chowringhee and drove away towards the southern part of Chowringee.
Immediately after the attack a lot of policemen started hunting for the assailants.
They cordoned off all the streets and there was complete chaos in the entire locality.
I could see at least four bodies of policemen and another 10 injured. Two pedestrians were also injured.
The only thing I can recall was that all four assailants were wearing jackets and were firing on everyone whom they could see.
