The passport had helped Malik to evade the police dragnet in connection with various crimes and escape to Dubai, Patna (central range) DIG A C Verma said.
The investigation would look into the circumstances relating to the issuing of the passport to Malik and the people involved would be thoroughly examined, he said.
The Kolkata police had launched a search for him in November in connection with the kidnapping of a shoe baron.
Later, an FIR was lodged on the basis of information given by the Kolkata police that Malik had fraudulently acquired a passport and had fled the country, Verma said.
The FIR was lodged against Malik and others for helping him procure the passport, he said, adding only Malik's name figured in the abduction of the businessman.
