The Delhi high court on Friday granted interim bail of six weeks to Manu Sharma, the main accused in the Jessica Lal murder case, but directed him to stay away from the National Capital Territory during the bail period.
Justice R C Chopra, while granting the bail, imposed other stringent conditions and asked Sharma to furnish a personal bond of Rs 100,000 along with two sureties in the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court.
The court ordered that he would neither leave India nor venture into NCT after being released from Tihar jail, where he has been lodged in judicial custody since May 1999.
Warning him against trying to influence the witnesses or tampering with the evidence directly or indirectly, Justice Chopra directed him to surrender before the trial court at the end of the six-week interim bail period.
Justifying the grant of interim bail, Justice Chopra said the high court, while rejecting his bail plea on September 3, 2001, had directed completion of the trial within four months.
"I feel it expedient to release the accused on interim bail for a period of six weeks, as the prosecution has a long way to go for the completion of the trial," the judge said.
