Wait for law ministry's decision on VHP's demand: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party president K Jana Krishnamurthy on Thursday appealed to all concerned to await the Union law ministry's decision on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's demand to hand over land adjoining the disputed territory to it.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Krishnamurthy said, "The Supreme Court order does not cover the undisputed area. They (VHP) may be justified in taking this stand. But then, there is the other view, which the Congress party has taken that unless a final verdict of the court is given out the undisputed land also cannot be handed over."

"Since there were two different points of view to the dispute, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has referred the matter to the Union law ministry, whose decision must be awaited," he said.

"Under these circumstances, there should be no room for any controversy," the BJP chief added.

The BJP chief said that no 'useful purpose' would be served by bringing up the earlier stand of his organisation regarding the construction of the temple.

"Events have overtaken that stand and as a responsible constituent of the National Democratic Alliance, the government and the party cannot have a different stand," he said.

He said, "The government was also bound by the Constitution, Rule of Law and its own agenda."

He appealed to all concerned to ensure that the country's cause was strengthened, and stand united in 'safeguarding the sovereignty, freedom and territorial integrity'.

"Security, both internal and external, is the need of the hour and the demand of time. Let us cooperate," he said.

He said, "The BJP understands the demand of the VHP that the court proceedings should be expedited, but his party has no other choice but to respect the court's verdict or a negotiated settlement."
