Mamata to stay out of Union Cabinet

Sheela Bhatt in New Delhi

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has refused to join the Union Cabinet during the reshuffle expected to be effected on Monday evening.

She refused to accept any ministry other than railways, sources said.

The railway ministry is currently being handled by Nitish Kumar of the Samata Party and it is appears highly unlikely that he will be told to make way for Mamata, they said.

This development comes two days after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced at a press conference in Lucknow that the Trinamool Congress would be a part of the NDA government at the Centre.

Mamata had quit the railway ministry in March 2001 after news portal tehelka.com blew the lid on the defence purchase scam.
