A station house officer (SHO) was transferred and an enquiry ordered by the Hyderabad police into the suicide of an accused in an attempt-to-rape case following allegations of harassment and illegal detention by the police.
After conducting an on-the-spot investigation on Wednesday, South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Govind Singh said that the SHO of Santosh Nagar police station in the old city failed to properly supervise the work of his subordinates.
In a statement, Govind Singh also said that the assistant commissioner of police of Mir Chowk will conduct an in-depth probe into the entire episode.
Narrating the history of the case to newspersons, Singh said that it revolves around Mir Mohammed Ali, who was accused of attempting to a rape a minor girl last week.
On July 18, an auto-driver Shaik Ahmed complained to the Santosh Nagar police that his neighbour Mir Mohammed Ali (45) had attempted to rape his minor sister (12), Singh said.
On the fateful day, Ali was watching television in his house alone as other family members had gone to visit relatives, he said.
When Ahmed's sister went to watch television in Ali's house, he reportedly switched off the lights, Singh said.
Ali then induced the victim by handing over a 10-rupee note and tried to undress her, he said.
When the girl raised a hue-and-cry, some neighbours rushed to the house and beat up Ali, Singh said.
On hearing of this, police rushed to the locality and took Ali to the Santosh Nagar police station for enquiries, he said.
But Ali was let off as Ahmed's family did not want to lodge a complaint fearing adverse publicity, Singh said.
However, he committed suicide in the early hours of Wednesday by jumping into a well near his house, Singh added.
A case was registered at the Santosh Nagar police station after Ali's wife complained that he committed suicide following police harassment and illegal detention.
In view of the allegations, a mandal revenue officer (MRO) conducted an inquest on the body and the post-mortem on the body was videographed.
Singh has assured Ali's family that appropriate action would be taken against those responsible.
