Maharashtra government not in
danger: Deshmukh

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Deshmukh on Tuesday said his government had enough legislators and there was no imminent threat to the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party-led coalition.

Talking to reporters at Raj Bhawan after swearing-in of three independent legislators, he said, "The very fact that we have sworn in three ministers today goes to prove that we are still in majority."

"I am ready to prove majority if required, but right now I do not find it essential," he said.

Coming down heavily on the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party opposition, he said these were pressure tactics being used to break his government, which was "deplorable in a democracy".

"In a democracy, the use of such pressure needs to be criticised as it can prove unhealthy in a country which believes in strong democratic principles," he said.

The government had plunged into crisis on Monday when eight independent legislators withdrew support.
