"As we have a clear-cut majority, we are sure to defeat the DF government," former deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde, a vice-president of the BJP, told reporters in Mumbai.
The five Nationalist Congress Party politicians who withdrew support to the DF government on Tuesday are expected to back the Sena-BJP along with 11 other NCP and five Congress MLAs, who will withdraw support 'shortly', Munde claimed.
Asked about Chief Minister Vilas Deshmukh's charge that the Sena-BJP combine is hiding some DF legislators without even informing their family members, BJP spokesman Atul Bhatkalkar retorted, "If the CM cannot protect his own MLAs, how will he protect the people?"
Bhatkalkar said that if the government was having a problem, the opposition was within its rights to take advantage of it.
He further said no family member of any MLA had filed a complaint and Deshmukh's allegation was baseless. "Blaming the BJP or the Sena is not correct as the government will collapse owing to its own problems," Bhatkalkar said. "It [the present crisis] is due to the bad treatment meted out to independent MLAs."
