Maharashtra: PWP to abstain during
trust vote

In a major setback to the Democratic Front government in Maharashtra, the five-legislator Peasants and Workers Party on Wednesday decided to abstain from voting on the confidence vote being sought by Chief Minister Vilas Deshmukh on Thursday.

"We will not support the trust motion and stay away from voting," party leader Jayant Patil said.

"Five of our MLAs will remain present in the House tomorrow but they will not vote," Patil said.

However, he asserted that in no case the PWP, wedded to the ideology of "left-secularism", would support the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine.

Governor P C Alexander had asked Deshmukh to seek vote of confidence after his government was reduced to a minority following the withdrawal of support by the PWP and a spate of defections thereafter.
