Karsevaks take out symbolic procession in Ayodhya

Defying prohibitory orders, about 100 karsevaks, mostly women and children, on Monday took out a symbolic procession in Ayodhya.

The karsevaks, assembled in the temple city, took out the march on Monday morning from 'Kar Sevak Puram', one of the camps set up for them, to another 'Ram Sevak Puram', covering a distance of about half a kilometre, and back, sources said.

VHP sources said the karsevaks would take out the march on Tuesday too.

The march was taken out a day after authorities put up public notices outside the two camps informing imposition of prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code banning rallies and demonstrations.

Significantly, the notices had disappeared and were apparently torn off.

Police seemed to take the development lightly as a senior official when contacted said the effort of the authorities was to prevent the karsevaks from coming on to the main roads.

Meanwhile, a batch of 75 karsevaks were on Monday transported out of Ayodhya in government-provided vehicles, Additional Director General of Police (law and order) A K Mitra said.

He said there had been no fresh arrivals during the past two days 'although they are attempts to enter the town'.

"We are keeping a close watch. While they are trying to reach Ayodhya, our effort is to prevent them," Mitra said.

The VHP, however, claimed that at least 75 karsevaks from Maharashtra had reached Ayodhya since Sunday night.

"They were stopped at places like Saharanpur and Gonda but they used various means, including walking, to reach Ayodhya," VHP media officer Sharad Sharma said.
