Bihar fails to plug flow of
karsevaks to Ayodhya

A M Sahay in Patna

Despite Bihar government's restrictions on the movement of karsevaks, hundreds of them are sneaking out of the state every day to reach Ayodhya.

Sources in the police department said it is easy for karsevaks to escape detection. All they have to do is not wear saffron clothes or carry trishuls that could give away their identity.

Also, if they do not raise slogans and travel in smaller groups it becomes impossible to tell a karsevak from a regular traveller.

Sources in the state home department said a large number of karsevaks have managed to catch trains and buses to reach Ayodhya in the past week or so to participate in the proposed construction of Ram temple at the disputed site.

They said senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders are coordinating with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal to make arrangements for these volunteers.

The state government had issued orders last week to prevent karsevaks from leaving the state.

Intelligence officers recently informed the government that more karsevaks were preparing to leave for Ayodhya and that it could be virtually impossible to stop them.

Sources said both -- the VHP and the Bajrang Dal -- have a large following in northern districts of East Champaran, West Champaran, Motihari, Purnia and Muzaffarpur. "The volunteers are willing to take any mode of transport to escape detection. It's virtually impossible to stop them. You can't place a blanket ban on people travelling to Uttar Pradesh," said a senior officer requesting anonymity.
